Youth Programs
Trout in the Classroom
Connecting Students to Their Watersheds
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) offers students of all ages the unique opportunity to raise trout in their own classroom and then release them into a local stream or river.
By caring for the fish daily, students develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems and foster a lasting conservation ethic. The culminating experience of walking to the streambank and releasing fingerlings connects classroom learning to the real world, linking the act of caring for fish with the responsibility of caring for our waters.
Trout Unlimited is one of many organizations helping facilitate this impactful program nationwide. The Pike Wayne TU chapter currently supports a TIC program at Western Wayne HS. Chapter members assist with the end of year field trip to Varden Conservation Area where students release young trout as part of a half day outdoor experience that includes hands on learning about stream quality parameters, aquatic insects and recreational fishing opportunities. Chapter members assist the program by reinforcing the importance of conservation and introducing fly-fishing and outdoor ethics.
In May of 2025, Chapter members participated in a modified version of this program for fourth graders, held at both RD Wilson and Evergreen Elementary Schools.
Contact the Youth Coordinator for more information or to learn how your classroom can participate in Trout in the Classroom.
Stream Keepers
Inspiring Youth to Protect Our Streams
Stream Keepers is a free, hands-on program designed for youth ages 11–14 and their chaperones to explore the health of local streams through fun, engaging activities. Participants will learn skills such as macroinvertebrate surveying, fly tying, fly casting, and more, all while gaining a deeper understanding of stream ecosystems.
This program is offered in partnership with the Pike Conservation District and the Pike/Wayne Chapter of Trout Unlimited. All stream equipment is provided for registered youth to use during the program, and lunch is included at no cost during the midday break. PWTU members teach participants about fly fishing, including casting instruction and hands-on fly-tying lessons.
Support to Scouting Programs
We’re excited to announce an upcoming program in partnership with Scouts BSA. This hands-on experience will give youth the chance to explore stream health and conservation while learning valuable outdoor skills. PWTU Chapter members look forward to assisting Scouting units in Pike and Wayne Counties with earning the Fly Fishing Merit Badge and more. Additional details will be available soon, but inquiries are welcome in the meantime.
